Drainage Service FAQs
A dry well helps to manage stormwater runoff. They also divert excess water away from your foundation. They are a good way to reduce the amount of water that enters your underground drain system. Dry wells are most useful in areas without a lot of space for surface drains.
A dry well is made by digging a hole into the ground, dropping in a container with holes in it and filling it with gravel. The container allows water to enter the dry well, where it’s then absorbed by the surrounding soil.
When considering using a dry well to help manage water runoff, you have to consider the surrounding soil. If the soil doesn’t absorb water well, the dry well may not be effective and could become saturated. That may lead to potentially worse problems with flooding or standing water.
A curtain drain, also called a French drain is a type of drainage system used to move water away from your foundation.
Curtain drains are very common solutions to water management in Westchester. They are particularly useful where the water table is high.
Curtain drains are installed by digging a trench around your foundation. Then, filling the trench with gravel and perforated pipe.
As the water fills in the soil, it flows through the gravel and into the perforated pipe. Once in the pipe, the water can be diverted away from your foundation.
A common mistake when installing curtain drains is not properly disposing of the water. Don’t just empty the water to other spots on your property. Ensure you tie the drain into existing drainage, or otherwise route it off of your property.
A sump pump is a device used to prevent standing water in a basement, garage or other area of your home. It’s installed by digging a hole in the ground and installing a pump that is automatically activated once the hole fills with water.
Sump pumps are a fantastic way to prevent flooding and ensure a waterproof basement. However, just like with other types of drainage, it’s critical that you properly route any water collected by your sump pump.
When it comes to managing water on your property, there is no easy answer.
The condition of your soil, slope of your land, location of your home and amount of standing water all play a part in installing the right drain system.
It’s important that you work with an experienced landscaper or excavating contractor to figure out what will work on your land.
A combination of underground drains, wells & pumps and changing the slope of your property can be used to achieve the results you need.
